The mission of the Prostate Cancer Resource Center
The Prostate Cancer Resource Center (PCRC) is a department of the cancer program at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth. The mission of the cancer program is to provide compassionate, quality services throughout the continuum of cancer care and to provide hope and peace to patients, families and the community. The PCRC supports this mission by providing quality educational resources for men and by having a compassionate, qualified nurse coordinator to be a patient advocate.
The impact of prostate cancer on our community
Prostate cancer is the most common invasive cancer in men. Lifetime risk of developing prostate cancer is estimated at 1:6. The American Cancer Society predicts over 180,000 men will be diagnosed in 2016.
Although prostate cancer is common, it is very treatable in the early stages with a >95% survival rate.
It is estimated over 2.9 million men in the US are prostate cancer survivors.
A simple blood test called PSA (prostate specific antigen) can provide information that will assist physicians in determining if there is a concern for cancer. The blood test alone does not indicate cancer.
